Ships

Mod Details

Pack: Ships v3.0.3 Author: EMD0123

Ships adds Illager-crewed vessels to the server's oceans. From lone patrol boats to full multi-ship fleets, these hostile ships roam the seas and will engage you on sight. The pack also introduces a signature mechanic: Illagers that fall into water will commandeer nearby boats and chase you across the ocean.

Single Ships

Single ships are individual vessels scattered across the ocean, similar in scale to vanilla shipwrecks but fully intact and crewed by hostile mobs.

Key details:

  • Crewed by Pillagers and Vindicators.
  • Built from various wood types, giving each ship a distinct appearance.
  • Loot is similar to vanilla shipwrecks -- supplies, food, and equipment.
  • Treasure maps found aboard lead to Pillager Outposts (not buried treasure).
  • Some variants function as patrol boats, sailing set routes across the ocean.
Approaching Single Ships

Single ships are manageable solo. Board from the stern (back) to avoid the bulk of the crew, and fight your way forward. Vindicators hit hard in melee, so keep them at range if you can.

Fleets

Fleets are multi-ship formations that represent a significant combat challenge. They are rarer than single ships and far more dangerous.

Kill All Evokers First

Each ship in a fleet has an Evoker on board. Illagers on fleet ships continuously respawn until ALL Evokers across ALL ships are killed. If you only kill the Evoker on one ship, the others will keep spawning reinforcements. You must eliminate every single Evoker in the fleet to stop the respawns.

Key details:

  • Multiple ships sailing in formation.
  • Each ship is crewed by Pillagers, Vindicators, and an Evoker.
  • Mobs continuously respawn until every Evoker in the fleet is dead.
  • Treasure maps found aboard lead to Woodland Mansions.
  • Significantly better loot than single ships.
Fleet Strategy
  1. Scout the fleet from a distance. Count the ships and plan your approach.
  2. Prioritize Evokers. Board each ship and kill the Evoker before dealing with other mobs. The Evoker is usually below deck or at the stern.
  3. Work fast. Every second you spend fighting regular mobs, those mobs are respawning on the ships you haven't cleared yet.
  4. Bring ranged weapons. Sniping Evokers from your own boat before boarding can save you a lot of trouble.
  5. Don't leave the fleet half-finished. If you sail away with Evokers still alive, the fleet will be at full strength when you return.

Illager Boats

Signature Mechanic

This is the most important mechanic to understand about the Ships pack. Any Illager that ends up in water will automatically board a nearby boat and patrol/chase players. This applies to all Illager types from any source, not just ship crews.

When Illagers fall or are knocked into the ocean, they don't just swim -- they seek out and board any nearby boat, then use it to patrol the waters and chase players.

This means:

  • Knocking crew members overboard doesn't neutralize them -- they become boat-mounted pursuers.
  • Illager patrols near coastlines can end up in boats if they wander into water.
  • A fleet engagement can scatter Illagers into multiple boats, creating a chaotic chase sequence.
Don't Knock Them Overboard

Your instinct might be to knock Illagers off ships into the water. Resist that urge. An Illager in a boat is faster and harder to hit than one standing on a deck. Kill them on the ship whenever possible.

Mob Reference

Mob Found In Behavior
Pillager Single Ships, Fleets Ranged attacker with crossbow. Shoots from the deck.
Vindicator Single Ships, Fleets Melee attacker with axe. High damage, charges at players.
Evoker Fleets only Casts Vexes and fangs. Killing all Evokers stops fleet respawns.

Tips for Sailors

General Advice

  • Bring a boat. You need your own vessel to approach and maneuver around ships and fleets.
  • Carry a shield. Pillager crossbow bolts and Vindicator axe swings are both blockable.
  • Check treasure maps. Single ship maps lead to Pillager Outposts; fleet maps lead to Woodland Mansions. Both are worth following up on.
  • Listen for crossbows. You'll often hear a ship before you see it. The sound of Pillager crossbows firing carries far over open water.
  • Avoid fleets until you're geared. If you spot a multi-ship formation early game, mark the coordinates and come back with proper equipment.
